Poesía y canción popular: Su convergencia en el siglo XX. Uruguay, 1960-1985 (Montevideo: Linardi y Risso, 2005. Pp. 206), was the first systematic study of the interrelationship of poetry and popular song as an alternative mode of socio-political expression, as confirmed by Rómulo Cosse, Director of the National Library of Uruguay in the preface (2005, 9-10). Since then Maria Figueredo has been invited to speak on this topic at various international fora, such as at Arizona State University, University of British Columbia, Queens University, and Ryerson University. Maria Figueredo is considered “a Canadian specialist in the relationships between literature and music in their specific socio-political contexts,” as Gordana Yovanovich affirmed in Latin American Identity after 1980: An Interdisciplinary Volume (2010, 301).
